A Pet Themed Session Just for You!
We love using pet themed sessions in our therapy rooms! You can use a pet theme any time, all year round!
Looking for ways to plan a pet theme session? We have 3 fun activities you can easily implement below:
Activity #1: Choose any "pet" themed book you can start your session off with. Pair the story with pet play-props and make your own pet shop with the mini objects. Talk about the different animals you might find in a pet store and what animals you saw in the story.
Activity #2: Use pet toy pieces, paper pieces or felt pieces to create your own pet shop or pet play scene! Practice the spatial concepts "on", "in", "under", "beside", "behind" as you place animals around the play scene. You can also practice following directions and have the child listen to what animal they need and where they should place it (e.g., put the hamster in the cage).
Activity #3: Hide pet themed mini objects or pet puzzle pieces inside your sensory bin to practice themed vocabulary or describing as you find the objects hidden inside! Hide the puzzle pieces around the room for the child to find. Practice expanding utterances (e.g., "I found a horse") or spatial concepts (e.g., the fish is under the table).
