A Garden Theme Session Just for You!

Who doesn't enjoy a fun garden theme during the spring and summer seasons?!

Here are some fun ways to use garden themed activities in a session you can use in your very own therapy room!

Activity #1: Read the story, "A Green, Green Garden" by Mercer Mayer. Pair the story with garden play-props or sequencing cards and reenact how to plant a garden. Talk about the different items you need to plant a garden and the steps to do so.

Activity #2: Create a sensory bag or sensory bin using crinkled paper for grass or dirt, pretend stones, flower surprise containers (or any mini container) and different texted items. Hide garden themed mini objects inside your sensory bin or surprise containers to practice themed vocabularydescribing or requesting as you find the objects hidden inside!

Activity #3: Use fairy garden mini objects, paper pieces or felt pieces to create your own garden scene! Practice the spatial concepts "on", "in", "under", "beside", "behind" as you place mini objects around the garden. You can also practice following directions (e.g., put the mushrooms on the rock).

Activity #4: Build a Garden (use the actual game or create your own garden in a similar manner)! Practice basic concepts (e.g., big/small, tall/short, on/off, in/out, first/last, before/after), requestingspeech sounds (e.g., S-blends: stick, stack; L-blends: flower, blue, place; L: leaf, petal, pull, tall, look, like, little), and expanding utterances (e.g., I want the blue flower, put the flower on).
