5 Ways to Use Easter Eggs in Speech Therapy

#1: Theme Vocabulary

Choose objects that belong to a specific theme – in this case spring or Easter themed objects (e.g., bunny, egg, carrot, chocolate, chick, flower, rainbow, etc.).

#2: Following Directions

1-step direction: hide different coloured eggs around the room. Have your child find the colour you say and bring it back to you. E.g., “Find the blue egg”, “Find the yellow egg”.

2-step direction: hide different coloured eggs around the room. Have your child find two eggs using FIRST-THEN instructions. E.g., First find the yellow egg, then find the blue egg.

#3: Describing

Place different objects inside each egg. Ask your child to go a find one egg and bring it back to you. Have the child open the egg and tell you three things about it (e.g., category, function, texture) and guess what the object is.

#4: Syllable Segmentation

 Write out 3 different numbers on a piece of paper and hide 1-3 syllable objects in the Easter eggs. Once the child finds an egg and opens it up, have the kiddo tell you how many syllables the word has and place it on the same number written on a piece of paper. This is essentially practicing BOTH syllable segmentation and sorting skills. 

#5: Spatial Concepts

Use an old egg carton and hide 12 plastic the eggs ON, IN, UNDER, BEHIND, BESIDE objects around the room. Have your child find one egg at a time and tell you where he/she found it. Then bring it back and place the egg in the egg carton. This provides a clear beginning and end to the activity – once all the spots are filled in the carton the game is over.
